New Google Keyword Tool

Google just released another tool to help you find keywords for your pay per click campaign and/or your overall search marketing campaign. First you’ll need to input your website and some of your target keywords and click submit to see the results. See below for a screen shot of the search results that I received when testing this out. I entered in emarketed.com and the following keywords: seo, ppc, web marketing, web design, website video marketing, cms, seo cms, organic cms, search engine optimization

And it gave me 810 suggestions showing me monthly searches, competition level, and search trends. You can click the magnifying glass icon to see the search trends for a specific keyword. A new window will open with Google Insights for Search which provides some very interesting data. You can see how many searches are done wordwide and have it broken down by country, state, and city level. The below screen shot shows what I found when I drilled down on “web design” and then selected United States and California. I was able to see that San Francisco had the most searches for this keyword with Los Angeles coming in 4th. It also displayed “google web design” as a rising search term so this would be a good word for us to optmize. Please disregard this last statement if you’re an SEO and/or web design company. Wink Wink 😉

Video Marketing Works

Online video is one of the best ways to capture an audience and convey a message. Increasingly popular is website video marketing. YouTube makes up 10% of all internet traffic, this makes YouTube an important resource for promoting yourself or message because there are millions of people actively searching for something. There are many sites you can post on for video marketing but because of YouTube already has such a large established network it is a community I suggest you join. If you are posting a video on YouTube one of the first things you should do is customize your social media account. Not only will you be able to change how your account looks, by altering colors and fonts, but you can also add links back to your business websites. Once you have done that you should begin to look for popular channels where the subscribers are active on YouTube. You should then build relationships with these active users, consider yourself the new member of a club, you need to be friendly and interesting. That way you can begin to build your list of friends and grow your network. These are just some basic steps that anyone considering YouTube marketing should look into. These days it is not enough to simply put your video out there and sit back. You have to be active and the more dedication you put into expanding your network, the greater the returns.

Local Search Marketing Workshop in Los Angles

We had a great turnout for our event last week. Please contact us if you’d like to be on our mailing list of free workshops. The next event will be held in early January. You can view a short video recap of the event here and also see the slides from the event below.

Google SEO Starter Guide

Google just released a great SEO starter guilde that I have skimmed through and plan to tackle in the next week. It covers the basics and is coming from the mouth of Google so the information has to be in line with their standards. I think this will be helpful to anyone new to SEO or if you’re trying to do search engine optimization (SEO) yourself. The information here will be helpful across all of the major search engines. I’ll post a blog after I’ve reviewed and give an unbiased review. It’s a 22-page PDF that covers some of the following:

  • Page Titles
  • Meta Tag Descriptions
  • Site Navigation
  • Creating Quality Copy
  • Anchor Text (Links)
  • Heading Tags
  • Image Optimization
  • Robot.txt files

Please post a comment if you get a chance to review this.

YouTube Video Marketing

I came across a video on YouTube the other night after the Obama victory speech that was promoting a DVD that a therapist in Florida produced. I was very impressed with this tactic of getting some potential viewers. The therapist that created the video included Obama in the title for the video.  I’m positive this YouTube video promoting a DVD got some decent traffic after the victory speech.  Video marketing on the web has become mainstream now so make sure and add this to your arsenal when it comes to search marketing. We will be posting more on video marketing in the upcoming months.

Blogging Tips & Helpful Blogs to Follow

I’m currently putting together a presentation for an event we’re hosting in Los Angeles on November 12th in a few weeks that will discuss blogging, local search engines, social bookmarking, and how to monitor your business and was inspired to post this blog about blogging. If you’re new to blogging these links will be very helpful. I’d sign up to follow these blogs so you can see some successful bloggers in action.

You might also want to follow a few blogs that relate to your business so you can see what others in your space are doing.

Here’s a list of what to look out for when you’re observing these bloggers.

  • Use of catchy headlines
  • Links to other sites and blogs from within content
  • Free downloads and how they capture your email
  • How often they post
  • Comments – post a link back to your blog if you can in the comments field (Start commenting on other blogs!)
  • Ad-ons (what else do they have on their blogs that add value to the user experience – twitter feed, list of users, advertisers, links to other social media sites such as Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon)

And lastly I’d start putting together a list of ideas for your own blog. Thanks for reading! Please feel free to post some blogs you’ve found helpful.

I love Search Engine Land!

I get daily emails from Search Engine Land. They continue to provide high quality news on search engines. I suggest signing up with their daily email if you’re serious about learning more about search engine marketing. One of my favorite sections is the Search Illustrated column since I’m able to learn some helpful information within a minute or so. They present different illustrations on search marketing. I’ve referred to these images in the past. They are created by a Elliance and you can view all of the past images on the Elliance site.

Free Broken Link Tool

I recently read about this tool and was inspired to test it out. The program is called Xenu and I was able to get it going in a few minutes. The download was small and the program setup in less then a minute. You just pop in your URL (http://www.yourdomain.com) and the tool goes to your site and checks your pages for the following criteria: size, title, last update, outgoing links, inbound links, and much more! I’ve included a screen shot below of the start up menu where you enter your domain and an image of the results. It also shows the results in a web browser when the report is finished. The report crawled 230 URLs in about twenty seconds!

How to Search Video

Just watched this video and thought it would be helpful to post here. It’s pretty basic but a lot of people out there using search engines don’t nessasarily know that you can use these methods to search to help narrow down your search results. The video teaches you how to do this in non technical jargon.
Enjoy! Let me know your thoughts.

6 Tips to Start a Successful Blog

It’s becoming more and more apparent to me that you must learn how to blog to stay ahead in search marketing. Search engines love fresh content and blogs allow you to easily add fresh content. In the last 2 years I’ve noticed entire sites in our industry turn their entire site into a blog. The blog platforms out there are very robust and offer you many benefits.

Here are 6 tips to create a successful blog:

1. Get a unique domain name. If you sign-up for a blogger account or a wordpress account you’ll get a sub domain and it will be tougher for search engines to find your content. Domains are going for as little as $7 a year now so make the plunge and buy your own domain name. Go to mydomain.com if you’d like to register a domain today.

2. Setup hosting. Hosting is also very cheap these days. You can spend as little as $5 per month to host your blog. This along with the domain name adds up to $67 for the entire year. Make sure and pick a hosting company that has 24/7 support and that has been around for some time. There are many hosting companies out there and some will not be around for the long haul. A few of my favorites are Dream Host and Media Temple.

3. Create an outline ahead of time so you have some topics to talk about. Make sure it is relevant to your businesses. If you sell books online than you could do book reviews and link directly to the books on your site.

4. Promote your blog. There are blog directories out there where you can submit your blog so you’ll start to get some readers. Also promote your blog on your main site. We (emarketed) have a banner on every page of our site pointing people to our blog. Also include a link in your email signature to direct people to your blog.

5. Get involved with other blogs. Comment on other peoples blogs and include a link back to your blog. This falls in line with promotion as well but helps you with getting in to the habit of reading others blogs which helps you get familiar with blogging. You’ll start to notice how blogs are written, how people interact with blogs, and hopefully gain some readers for your blogs.

6. Setup Google Analytics to track your blog traffic. Google Analytics is an amazing free program that can be installed on your blog in a few minutes. WordPress has a plugin where you install and just input your Google ID number for Google Analytics. You can see what site someone found you on, how long they stay on your blog, what size monitor they are viewing your blog on and so much more.

Hope this helps. Feel free to leave a comment if you think of some others that I missed. I know there are many but this will get you off to a good start.
